The Bergamont have established themselves as great purveyors of thoughtful and proactive approaches to global issues and perspectives, often by looking inward through the lens of personal experience. For World Suicide Prevention Day this September 10th, they are here with a song written to member Nathaniel Paul’s brother, a suicide survivor. This resonate song is filled with the weight of reflection, the kind that is made even more powerful by its hope that it will never have to happen again.

“BONES is the song that we wanted to share with the world on World Suicide Prevention Day. The burdens we carry in life are never buried. If someone leaves this world, their burdens are passed on to the loved ones, friends, and family; who will carry on the memory of the departed. Bones is a reminder that what has broken us can also make us beautiful. In the eyes of those who may need the most support – others who are in the dim light of depression. The Bones video is a reminder of how the human brain can work against us. Glitching, repeating, resisting. I hope that this piece can give people a sense of hope, in the end, to turn away from suicide. I hope we can do our part to tell people – it’s alright to not be alright.” – Nathaniel Paul

“The opening lines of BONES are the first words I told my brother after checking out of rehab for the 2nd time. My family had to intervene in a suicide attempt on Christmas Day 2016. 3 months later, we sat together on the banks of Lake Michigan as he first listened to BONES. With tears streaming down his face he said, “I want to send this song to all my friends at rehab – to everyone in rehab.” My brother is alive to this day. BONES speaks the truth with love; we can’t just run from our burdens.” – Ever Upwards, Nathaniel Paul

World Suicide Prevention Day

Suicide is one of the most common causes of death worldwide, claiming over 800,000 a year.  That’s a person every 40 seconds, and the numbers are rising rapidly. And there are still more people who have attempted suicide, are contemplating it, or have suicidal ideation. World Suicide Prevention Day aims to raise awareness of the issue, to help affected people receive help, and to encourage the means for that help. For every person that commits suicide, there are many more who suffer from that loss—the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) estimates 135 people for every one person. There are things that we can all do to help ourselves and everyone around us. Here is a list of #WorldSuicidePreventionDay hashtags in different languages, provided by the IASP. Here is the United States’ National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which you can reach by calling 1(800)273-8255; TrevorLifeline, for the LBGTQ+ community, that you can reach at 1(866)488-7386; and many more globally.

The Bergamot – “BONES” Lyrics

It’s hard to carry a burden
If you don’t have any bones
You can’t just fly away
If your wings are made
Of stone

Waiting can be fun
If you can live forever
Take your place in line
How far there is no
Measure

This life
That we live
It’s all that we take
All that we give

‘Cuz I don’t believe that it’s true
Just do as I say
But not as I do
Because I want to believe in you
The promise you made
I’m holding on to

It’s hard to carry a burden
If you don’t have any bones

Compare the empires to angels
In all we know and love
There is a beauty in the unknown
As lightning strikes from above

This life
That we live
It’s all that we take
All that we give

‘Cuz I don’t believe that it’s true
Just do as I say
But not as I do
Because I want to believe in you
The promise you made
I’m holding on to

‘Cuz I don’t believe that it’s true
Just do as I say
But not as I do
Because I want to believe in you
The promise you made
I’m holding on to

It’s hard
To carry a burden
Yeah, it’s hard
To carry a burden
I said it’s hard
To carry a burden
Said it’s hard
To carry a burden

If you don’t have any bones
If you don’t have any bones
If you don’t have any bones
